HEALTHY sitting

Why it is healthy to become 13 active while sitting.

Sitting straight

  • The highly curved, S-shaped backrest offers optimal lumbar support. This actively supports the spine in the lower back.
  • The flexible backrest and the oscillating seat (similar to sitting on a ball) intuitively activate movements. These movements result in a switch between tightening and relaxing the more than 400 muscles, which naturally trains the core. Benefit: Discs and muscles are better supplied with blood and nutrients. Active and dynamic sitting is promoted intuitively!
  • Doesn’t support the back at all! People often sit with their backs arched like a cat. “Hanging” posture results in passive behaviour and thinking. The result: Students are physically and mentally “tired” and
no longer actively follow the lesson.
  • Muscular imbalances are the result!

360° sitting

  • The Flötotto seat shell is almost completely circular and offers freedom of movement in every direction (360° sitting).
  • Every sitting position is possible:
  • Sitting straight (e.g. for focused, temporary instruction phases)
  • Sitting sideways (e.g. when working while looking at mobile board systems or for communicative group work)
  • Straddling (e.g. for sitting in a circle and discussion rounds)
  • In contrast to conventional school chairs, the seat shell is rounded down significantly on all sides.
  • That means: No localised or surface pressure on the thighs, instead optimal blood circulation! Optimal blood circulation guarantees a constant supply of oxygen to the brain. The result: Students stay alert longer and can better concentrate on and follow the lesson – success in class and motivation increase!
  • Nearly all conventional school chairs on the market attempt to provide the user the most support possible. The seat is extremely curved on the sides and the backrest is highly contoured on both sides. This creates a “racer’s seat” that should fit like a glove
  • That means: No freedom of movement for the user =
  • Sitting sideways results in painful localised stress points on the thighs The result: Blood congestion! Legs begin to “tingle” and fall

Elbows when sitting straight

  • The narrow backrest provides optimal, temporary support for the upper body and results in the necessary relaxation of the pelvis (iliac crest support).
  • Elbows can swing backward freely.
  • Rotational movements on the seat are particularly easy and arms can move pass the backrest without the backrest getting in the way. Benefit: maximum freedom of movement for the arms!
  • A wide and expansive backrest restricts freedom of elbow movement!
  • The user is forced to sit in the same position because their elbows are “locked in place”. The result: restricted freedom of movement and static sitting results in muscular imbalances.

Straddling

  • A tapered backrest provides comfortable freedom of leg movement and optimum blood circulation.
  • Rounded, soft edges optimally adjust to the body.
  • The arched backrest doesn’t cut into you when resting your arms!
  • This makes the backrest a comfortable armrest.
  • Backrest barely tapered because it is usually very wide.
  • Sharp edge cut into the arms and cause hazardous blood congestion.
  • Painful when resting arms on the backrest because the backrest is straight (sharp-edged). The arms rest on the narrowest and pointiest edge!

Sitting sideways

  • The highly curved, S-shaped backrest offers optimum upper body support when sitting sideways.
  • In contrast to conventional school chairs, the seat shell is rounded down significantly on all sides. That means: No localised or surface pressure on the thighs, instead optimal blood circulation even when sitting sideways!
  • The arched backrest doesn’t cut into you when resting your arms! This makes the backrest a comfortable armrest..
  • Straight backrests cause the upper body to “tilt to the side”.
  • Sitting sideways results in painful localised stress points on the thighs. The result: Blood congestion! Legs begin to “tingle” and fall asleep.
  • Painful when resting arms on the backrest because the backrest is straight (sharp-edged). The arms rest on the narrowest and pointiest edge!
